I'm so excited...one of my scholarship essay was selected to be published. It is in the top 2% of the essays submitted to be considered for the scholarship. (I wont find out until January, though) I want to share with you my essay. The topic was "The Best City to Live In" “If I Can Make It There, I’ll Make It Anywhere” If I could live anywhere in the world, I would live in one of the most diverse, action-packed, busiest cities in the world. Of course, I am referring to New York City. In college I plan on pursuing a double major in both telecommunications and news-editorial journalism. New York City is the perfect place to shine in that field. There are so many “news worthy” stories that happen on every corner throughout the city. I could make a great living doing what I love there. Furthermore, all of the top news studios are located in the heart of the city. So, the career opportunities there would be immense. In addition, the liveliness of the city is perfect for me. The busy, always on the go, lifestyle is something that I want to be a part of any place that I live. To me it seems like everyone is there for a purpose. Regardless of whether it is business or pleasure, there is so much to do. There are theaters, art museums, and parades celebrating various people’s heritage. There are also numerous landmarks and monuments such as the Statue of Liberty. Sometimes I dislike having to drive so far to get wherever it is that I need to be. In New York City that would not be a problem. Anything I could ever need would be just a few blocks away. I could walk down the street and be able to get my groceries or go to eat at a great restaurant. The city has an extremely sophisticated public transportation system that makes getting anywhere quickly an easy task. The biggest down side about living there would be being so far away from my family. It would be extremely hard because they are the people that I go to whenever I have a special need. My mother, father, step-father and five brothers are a big part of my life. Surviving without the physical closeness that I have grown to love would be difficult. I am grateful to be living in an age where family cell phone calling plans, e-mail, and text messaging are an integral part of our daily lives. Those will all help to shorten the distance between my family and friends. I really want to be able to use what I will learn in college and put all that hard work to good use. New York is the perfect place for that. In addition to some of the top new studios being located there, some very prestigious new papers, such as the New York Times, are also located there. I would really be able to utilize and continue to develop on my journalism skills. I sometimes think about how much coverage, both on television and print, was needed when the tragedies of September 11th occurred. It was all anyone talked about for months. All the television stations, reporters, and photographers that were there were able to document a tragic event that changed the fabric of America forever. Because of those journalists, people will have written, picture and video documentation of that time in our nation’s history. To me, those journalists represent an invaluable component in our country and the freedom of speech that we all enjoy. Many of the world’s best most renowned reporters live there. I want to be one of those people. I want to live in New York City. |
